We all have been taught since a very young age that you shouldn’t touch a hot stove, don’t run into traffic, or run with a knife, but there are home slip-ups that can also be dangerous that  as adults, we don’t pay much attention to.

Standing on an unbalanced surface such as a kitchen chair or rickety stool to reach something up high can put you in danger.  According to the Consumer Report’s Magazine Shopsmart, more than 164,000 people are injured because they fell off a ladder in their home.  Buy a quality ladder with a handle at the top and do not climb higher on the rungs than is recommended by the manufacturer.

Cross-contamination of germs using the same cutting-boards and knives when cutting poultry and other foods simultaneously,  puts you at risk.  You really need to have more than one cutting board.  Wash the pieces that you use on any product that may have fecal matter or salmonella in very hot soapy water, or run through the dish washing cycle.  Also, don’t assume that the term pre -washed means that it’s clean.  Wash them again.  Of the bags that were tested that were advertised as pre washed, Consumer Reports found 40 % of the samples exceeded acceptable levels of bacteria.  Wash with water, letting the water clean the lettuce, veggies or fruit.

Putting papers on an electric stove top is dangerous.  My home stove can stay hot for 20 minutes after it’s been turned off, though the burner does not appear ‘red’, and it’s not a late model either.  Several times my kids have put plastic Tupperware or papers on top of the cooktop and they melted, creating a hazard.

Using a knife and cutting toward your body.  Knife safety is an easy thing to become blasé’ about.  There are lots of professional chefs with parts of their fingertips gone.  Don’t let it happen to you.

I’m discussing these issues with you to bring to your mindset that there are hazards in your home that can be avoided with planning and mind-fullness.
